Scabies is the English term for "ghẻ," a highly contagious skin condition caused by infestation with the Sarcoptes scabiei mite. These microscopic mites burrow into the upper layer of the skin where they live and lay eggs. The primary symptom of scabies is intense itching, which typically becomes worse at night. This itching results from the body’s allergic reaction to the mites, their eggs, and their waste. The areas commonly affected include the webbing between the fingers, wrists, elbows, and waistline, although the rash can eventually spread across the entire body if not treated.

Transmission of scabies usually requires prolonged skin-to-skin contact with an infected person, making it common among family members or in crowded living conditions such as nursing homes. In some instances, sharing clothing, bedding, or towels can also spread the infestation. After initial exposure, symptoms may not appear for up to six weeks; however, reinfection causes symptoms to appear much more rapidly, sometimes within a few days. Scratching due to intense itching can lead to secondary bacterial infections, further complicating the condition.

Effective treatment for scabies involves prescribed topical medications, such as permethrin cream or oral ivermectin, to eliminate the mites. It is important to treat all close contacts and wash linens and clothing in hot water to prevent reinfestation. Although scabies is uncomfortable and often associated with stigma, proper medical care can resolve the infection within a few weeks. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are essential to controlling outbreaks and reducing the risk of complications like bacterial skin infections.
