In Chinese mythology, Chang’e, known as Hằng Nga in Vietnamese culture, is the revered Moon Goddess. She is widely celebrated during the Mid-Autumn Festival and is a symbol of beauty, immortality, and longing. According to legend, Chang’e was married to Houyi, a heroic archer who saved the world by shooting down nine extra suns. As a reward for his bravery, the Queen Mother of the West bestowed upon Houyi an elixir of immortality. Out of their deep love, Houyi wished to remain with Chang’e rather than become immortal alone, so he kept the potion hidden. But one day, Peng Meng, a treacherous apprentice, tried to steal the elixir. In order to protect it, Chang’e drank the potion herself and ascended to the Moon, where she resides eternally.
Throughout centuries, the tale of Chang’e has been reimagined in literature, poetry, and art across East Asian cultures. Her story is linked to themes of sacrifice, separation, and devotion. Even though Chang’e lives alone on the Moon, watching over the world below, her love for Houyi is celebrated every year when families gather to admire the full moon and share mooncakes. As children listen to stories of Chang’e, they learn about the importance of loyalty, selflessness, and hope. The luminous moon has thus become a reminder of reunions and memories, carrying Chang’e’s legacy through generations, reminding people to cherish those they love.
Chang’e’s legend has also become a rich source of inspiration in modern times, appearing in popular films, television dramas, and even space programs. In recent years, China named its lunar exploration missions “Chang’e,” underscoring her significance as a symbol of aspiration and progress. Her image—graceful and serene—is often depicted wearing flowing robes, holding a jade rabbit or standing beneath the osmanthus tree on the Moon. As societies continue to change, the myth of Chang’e resonates universally, portraying the human yearning for connection amidst distance. Her tale bridges cultural heritage and contemporary dreams, making Chang’e not only a mythical figure but also a timeless muse for storytellers around the world.
